The craft beer scene is booming in and around Annapolis, with a tight-knit network of brewers creating some of the East Coast’s most innovative and exceptional beers. In addition to the wide-ranging pours on their tap lists, their brewery spaces are all hip and welcoming, with live music, special events, rare beer releases, and a warm ambiance to mingle with fellow beer lovers. You also won’t want to miss two autumn beer festivals in Westminster and Baltimore, MD, each less than an hour’s drive away. Our Maryland bed and breakfast is the perfect home base for hopping from one distinctive Annapolis brewery to another, every pint more refreshing than the last.
Centuries of Annapolis Beer History – From the Founding Fathers to Modern-Day
Beer-making has a storied heritage in Annapolis stretching back over three centuries to when the first brewery opened here in 1703, ebbing and flowing over the years much like the Chesapeake Bay tides. During the 1700s, beer was primarily made in homes, planting the seeds of the home-brewing culture that would take root across the country. Several United States founding fathers, including George Washington, were avowed beer enthusiasts, and Samuel Adams famously has a beer named after him. Throughout the 1800s, European immigrants brought their beer traditions across the Atlantic, and Maryland breweries flourished, only to be squashed later by Prohibition in the 1920s. But in recent times, beginning with the craft beer movement taking hold in the 1990s, our breweries are blossoming again, reminiscent of the early Colonial days when local beer had top billing in Annapolis taverns and pubs.
During the 1770s, George Washington visited the Annapolis area several times, including Widow Ramsay’s Tavern and Rawling’s Tavern, where he enjoyed pints of beer amidst delicious food, intellectual conversation, and Revolutionary War strategizing. In the spirit of triumphantly overcoming British rule, American-made beer became a symbol of US independence and a way to celebrate our fledgling and industrious new nation. Annapolis taverns were also undoubtedly lively with political debate when Washington stepped down as commander of the Continental Army in 1783 at the Maryland State House, which then served as the US capitol for the next nine months. Amidst the turmoil of the war and the resulting newfound excitement after gaining independence, a cold pint served as a form of respite and relaxation. Benjamin Franklin – another founding father who frequented Annapolis’ Middleton Tavern with Washington and Jefferson – encapsulated it in his famous quote: “Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Four Must-Visit Annapolis Area Breweries
Forward Brewing
Less than a mile from our location and across the Spa Creek bridge in Eastport, the Forward Brewing crew has made a big splash since brewing their first beer in 2020. As a “nano-brewery,” they produce less than 2,000 barrels a year – a boutique operation run by a husband, wife, and chef trio who all met while working in Annapolis restaurants.
After learning that 90% of beer poured in Maryland bars and restaurants came from out of state, they endeavored to craft “forward-looking” beers in a new Annapolis brewery space where the community can gather and connect over pints. Their beers stand out in flavoring and style, including the May Day tangerine coconut sour and Riposo chocolate stout, aged in whiskey barrels.
Come hungry, as their kitchen puts out tasty dishes like Chesapeake lump crab pimento dip served with freshly baked pretzels and catfish tacos with guava mole. Grab a table on their massive outdoor patio during the warmer months or saddle up inside during the winter at their shared community tables, where the conversation flows, especially every second Thursday for Trivia Night. Look out for special farm-to-table beer and food evenings, when you’ll get a brewery tour, a four-course dinner, and an in-depth discussion of beer pairings and characteristics – a treat for foodies and beer devotees.
Cult Classic Brewing
Only a scenic 25-minute drive from downtown Annapolis, Cult Classic Brewing is on Kent Island, just across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. At 31 square miles, Kent Island is the most sizeable land mass in the bay, worthy of a day trip to taste their quirky brews and experience driving across the impressive 4.3-mile bridge en route. With a nod to cult films, their 16 beers have names like “Imperial March,” a dark and malty stout paying homage to Star Wars, and “Attack of the Strawberry Blonde,” a crisp summer ale whose label looks just like a 1960s movie poster. They also serve a full menu, including various appetizers, wraps, four mac and cheese dishes, and nine specialty pizzas. Plan to visit on a Thursday afternoon or evening when the brewery hosts the weekly Kent Island Farmers’ Market from 3:30-6:30 pm, while Friday and Saturday nights feature live music or comedy. After your trip back across the Bay Bridge, plan to catch a sunset on the water at Sandy Point State Park, one of the most scenic beaches near Annapolis.
Pherm Brewing Co.
Head just 16 miles north of Annapolis to the tiny and charming town of Gambrills, where the beer-makers at Pherm Brewing Company have quickly gained accolades since opening in 2020, jumping from home-brewing to full brewery during the pandemic. Artisanal selections abound among their rotating 14 beers on tap, like a chocolatey peanut butter porter and saison farmhouse ale aged in wine barrels. They’re active in the Annapolis community, as shown by their Seas the Bay American IPA, a collaboration with Schooner Woodwind, who have been leading Chesapeake Bay boat tours aboard their 73-foot wooden schooner for decades. On Wed through Sun nights, they welcome food trucks to serve on-site, including faves like Taqueria El Primo, Salt & Pepper BBQ, and Jimmy’s Famous Seafood. Upcoming summer 2024 events include an always-fun karaoke night on Aug 9th, Sunday morning yoga on Aug 11th, and an album release party for Annapolis band Pressing Strings on Aug 17th.
Crooked Crab Brewing Co.
Noticing a lack of local breweries near Annapolis, three University of Maryland grads opened Crooked Crab Brewing Company in 2018 and set up shop in Odenton, just a 20-minute drive from Annapolis and the first microbrewery in Anne Arundel County. Their array of 19 beers is the most of any Annapolis brewery, with tasting notes to please any palate, like the Double Key Lime Pie Sour, the ultra-hoppy and cleverly-named I Fought the Claw ale, and the Crabman New England IPA, an ode to the crabbing crews who have made their living on the Chesapeake Bay for generations. Order one of their brick oven pizzas to accompany your pint, and for an after-meal treat, try one of their six specialty meads made with orange blossom honey.
Celebrating Maryland Breweries at Two Fall Beer Festivals
In addition to visiting our excellent breweries nearby, plan a fall visit to coincide with one of our local beer fests. At these events, you can try beers from across Maryland and meet the brewmasters behind the magic in one festive afternoon. On Sept 28, 2024, the Maryland Microbrewery Festival will ring in its 18th year of bringing together over a dozen breweries to pour their rarest and most prestigious beers. It takes place from 11 am – 6 pm, an hour’s drive north of Annapolis at the Union Mills Homestead, a sprawling 16-acre historical landmark and country estate dating back to the 1790s. Between sipping beers and browsing the brewery tents, check out live music on an outdoor stage, attend free home-brewing seminars, and stroll around the pastoral property where an age-old barn and grist mill still stand centuries later.
Every autumn, the Brewery Association of Maryland—a non-profit group founded in 1999 representing the far-flung network of breweries spread throughout the state—hosts its annual Baltimore Craft Beer Festival. Over 50 breweries set up at Canton Waterfront Park overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in downtown Baltimore (only 30 miles north of Annapolis and our neighbors just up the bay), pouring their finest brews from 12 to 5 p.m. on November 9th, 2024. If you’re a true beer connoisseur, opt for the “Beer Geek” pass, which grants early access to exclusive beer tappings alongside a special souvenir pint glass. Several bands play throughout the afternoon, food trucks serve fresh dishes, and judges do live beer tasting on stage while handing out awards for the year’s top beers, celebrating the best of Maryland brewing.
